This study presents a review of the interpretation of the terms of the Sutcliffe’s equation and its contribution to the prediction of low and high pressure systems. For this reason, it was performed a case study of an extratropical cyclone that was associated with a cold wave in Brazil. The cyclone occurred on July 15, 2017 between the coast of Uruguay and Argentina. An intense horizontal gradient of surface air temperature and the horizontal advection of absolute vorticity at 500 hPa contributed to the formation of the low over the surface. The horizontal advection of absolute vorticity, according to the Sutcliffe’s equation, was important to the system manutention. On the other hand, this advection associated with the horizontal advection of air temperature were important to guide the displacement of the cyclone on the surface.Este estudo apresenta uma revisão da interpretação dos termos da equação de Sutcliffe e sua contribuição na previsão de sistemas de baixa e alta pressão em latitudes médias. Para tanto, é realizado o estudo de um ciclone extratropical que esteve associado a uma onda de frio no Brasil. O ciclone teve gênese no dia 15 de julho de 2017 entre a costa do Uruguai e da Argentina. Um intenso gradiente horizontal de temperatura do ar na superfície e advecção horizontal de vorticidade absoluta ciclônica em 500 hPa contribuíram para a formação do centro de baixa pressão em superfície. Já a advecção horizontal de vorticidade absoluta ciclônica, de acordo com a equação de Sutcliffe, foi importante para a manutenção do sistema e, quando associada com a advecção horizontal de temperatura do ar, controlaram o deslocamento do ciclone em superfície.
