The article is about the authors’ ideas to clear up the use of the theoretical level methods in the scientific investigation, specifically the historical-logical one, from the analysis made to some Doctor´s and Master´s Degree research works in which this method is stated and also from the participation experience in some scientific degree board of examiners and tutorship of some other research works, contexts where controversial positions have appeared regarding its use, which take it apart from the dialectical and materialistic conception as a general method of investigationEl artículo recoge las ideas de los autores  para esclarecer el uso de los métodos del nivel teórico en la investigación científica,  específicamente el método histórico-lógico, a partir del análisis de algunas de las investigaciones de maestría y doctorales en las que se declara este método; de la experiencia en la participación en tribunales de grado científico y tutorías, contextos en los que se ha evidenciado posiciones controversiales acerca de su uso que lo alejan de la concepción de la dialéctica materialista como método general de la investigación.
