Problems of misuse of resources and the environmental impacts of production systems are a constant threat to protected areas. In the case of the buffer zone of the AFIW NNP, interest has been directed at strengthening food security processes. However, it is necessary to take a step further and strengthen production systems with a view to generating income for families in the area. This is precisely the objective of this work, to identify the elements to be taken into account for the definition of production systems for the generation of surpluses, articulated with the market. An analytical empirical work was done; the instruments for the survey of the data were the survey and archival archiving. The analysis supported the methodological framework for the analysis of sustainable rural livelihoods, using multivariate analyzes. There are more diversified paths in production, but less articulated with the markets, the most productive areas, are the most fragile and within the determinants of articulation to the markets are the roads, machinery and cooperation networks. Income generation alternatives at the productive level should be explored in the lower and middle parts of the basins, while in the upper parts, the potential to access payment for environmental services.Los problemas por el mal uso de los recursos y los impactos ambientales de los sistemas de producción son una amenaza constante para las áreas protegidas. En el caso de la zona amortiguadora del PNN AFIW, el interés se ha dirigido a fortalecer los procesos de seguridad alimentaria; sin embargo, se requiere dar un paso más adelante y fortalecer los sistemas de producción con miras a la generación de ingresos de las familias de la zona. Este es precisamente el objetivo de este trabajo, identificar los elementos a tener en cuenta para la definición de los sistemas productivos para la generación de excedentes, articulados con el mercado. Se realizó un trabajo empírico analítico, los instrumentos para el levantamiento de los datos fueron la encuesta y el arqueo de archivo; el análisis se apoyó el marco metodológico para el análisis de medios de vida rural sostenibles, empleando análisis multivariados. Existen veredas más diversificadas en cuanto a producción, pero menos articuladas con los mercados, las áreas más productivas, son las más frágiles y dentro de los determinantes de articulación a los mercados se tienen las vías, la maquinaria y las redes de cooperación. Las alternativas de generación de ingresos a nivel productivo deben explorarse en las partes bajas y medias de las cuencas, mientras que en las partes altas, se debe aprovechar el potencial para acceder a pago por servicios ambientales.
