Resumen
This paper presents the sizing and analysis of a hybrid power generation system in Foz do Areia power plant and its impacts on the 2017 hydro’s capacity factor. Allying the concept of reversible hydro and grid-tied photovoltaic systems, this study proposes a pumping system fed by photovoltaic modules also capable of injecting power directly into the grid. A theoretical background on brazilian’s electrical sources and its expansion horizons brings an overview of the future of renewable energy sources. Looking to the grid-tied PV systems through a stability and power demand point of view, emerges the option of energy storage in reversible hydro as in response to these problems. The dimension and the analysis of the system performance under two scenarios, is based on photovoltaic-hydro literature and brings discussions and considerations concerning the dimensioned system and its energetic impact on Foz do Areia power plant. Even though the simulations attended different conditions of volume pumped and the case of a purely on grid PV system, the results found were not promising from the point of view of capacity factor augmentation, although, in terms of generating photovoltaic energy, the contribution to the system is relevant.
