Resumen
This paper presents a performance analysis of FACTS devices in response to atmospheric discharges in transmission lines. The inclusion of this device provides better transmission stability and improves power quality. In this scope, the behavior of the grid is observed with FACTS devices, one of the components that features the need to improve transmission quality using the concept of modernize the grid, Smart Grid. These devices are able to modify transmission line’s parameters and thereby improve its performance. For the purpose of this paper it will be used a TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator), one of the most implemented FACTS devices in transmission lines, to analyze its response to atmospheric discharge. The principle of operation and a MATLAB/Simulink model will be discussed. The focus of the analysis will be on the current and voltage peaks values in each bus, after and before using the divice.
