Resumen
Commercial adhesives commonly used in plywood panels’ production contain resins having formaldehyde in its composition, which is a carcinogen. The castor-oil based polyurethane adhesive is an alternative to replace those adhesives, because its origin is a natural raw material, does not release harmful substances to health or the environment, due to its solvent free composition, and can be commercially produced. Plywood panels were produced with castor-oil based polyurethane adhesive using 180 g/m², 160 g/m², 140 g/m² and 120 g/m², with urea-formaldehyde and phenolformaldehyde based adhesive using 180 g/m². Specimens were cut and the bending and shear glue line tests were done. The results showed no strength reduction of the boards produced with the polyurethane adhesive for both tests in normal conditions of humidity and temperature. Critical conditions of humidity and temperature can cause a strength reduction on those boards. It means that castor-oil based polyurethane adhesive can replace commercial adhesives for internal use plywood panels.
