Resumen
The study of beliefs in foreign language learning became popular in Brazil in the 90s, and the number of papers in this area has been increasing since then. A great deal of these papers focuses on public schools, but always in urban context. Thus, a huge number of students who live in the rural context are left aside. Considering Barcelos’s (2006) studies on beliefs and Caldart’s (2012) studies on countryside education, I investigated the beliefs of students from a school located in a rural area of Campo Largo, Paraná. The data was gathered through a questionnaire applied to thirty-eight students and the results were very interesting because they showed how some beliefs depend on a trigger to exist in their discourse. This finding serves as a starting point for further investigation of the functioning of beliefs and their influence in rural context.
