The forestry sector has great importance for the Brazilian economy. However, due to the peculiarities required in this business, their activities are likely to have a high risk of accidents. Within this context, this paper seeks, through a case study, analyze the main precepts regarding safety in the forest environment. For this, we developed a checklist, which was based second items and vestments required by Norm 31. This standard establishes provisions related to safety and health at work, which must observed the environment and the organization of work activities of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Aquaculture and Forestry. The checklist was adapted and applied in a company that provides services to forest harvesting by implementing management plans. The intended goal during the study is to assess the financial impact that the fines for noncompliance would result in the company observed. For that amount of fines was used values based on tables NR-28, which deals with Inspections and Penalties. Thus, for each nonconforming item was estimated a value of fine and cost to fit this requirement. With the results of applying the checklist, there was noncompliance of 11 items, 125 items were analyzed in the enterprise. What has generated an amount of R$ 23,643.71 in fines that would apply in case of inspection. The cost of adequacy for non-conforming items was estimated at R $ 2,201.00. At the end of this study it was concluded that the total cost of fines for non-compliant items would be far greater than the cost to be expended for the adequacy of requirements.
