Resumen
Viscoplastic fluids are observed in several industrial processes. Particularly, waxy crude oils flows at low temperature and drilling operations are of singular importance to the Brazilian industry. These fluids have a yield stress limit that must be surpassed to restart the flow. Therefore, the aim of the present work is to visualize the interface and the associated phenomena to the restart flow of a gelled fluid in a transparent tube, relating the pressure required to break the structure and the correspondent wall shear stress. For this purpose, an experimental apparatus is proposed to evaluate and visualize the interface breakage, using a commercial dispersion of Carbopol® as fluid test. The displacement of the gel is the result of a hydrostatic pressure applied by immiscible and Newtonian hydraulic oil in a reservoir with height control. Thus, three shear stress bands are applied considering the material yield limit stress. The results were obtained using a camera with image post-processing, making possible to obtain a relation between the pressure applied and fluid displacement rate. So it’s possible to verify the high potentiality of the experimental apparatus, relating the different levels of pressure with the gelled material displacement, with suggestions to improve the results.
