This study aimed to highlight the importance of experimental activities in the teaching of science and biology by checking the use or not of this teaching strategy for teachers of these subjects in State Colleges of the city of Umuarama/PR. We identified the importance of experimental activities to provide students with an understanding of the scientific and technological foundations in linking theory and practice and also develop reflection of attitudes about scientific theories and their limitations. The teacher's role in carrying out experimental activities was discussed: plan, teach, guide, monitor the implementation of activities and organize necessary materials and equipment. The role of the school management was seen as an incentive for teachers to use of experimental activities. Some characteristics that were listed school laboratory must have, in addition to the aforementioned basic materials and reagents for initiating the use of experimental activities in a school laboratory. Complemented with a survey, the study found, through questionnaires, if experimental activities are being used in State Colleges studied. As a result, it was observed that the three Colleges, experimental activities were used in the teaching-learning process, however infrequently, whichever is the use of experimental activities, as in traditional teaching, only as a teaching methodology to prove the contents that are worked in the classroom.
