dc.description.abstractMethods of cutting edge preparation have been increasingly developed by the industry due to the provided benefits, mainly expanding the tool’s life and consequently reducing costs. The technique of these methods is highly complex, therefore there is few scientific data about it available, being kept in industrial secret levels. This paper evaluates the viability of using gun drills prepared through the automatic cutting edge rounding process of Drag Finishing, in which a machine is used for the edge preparation, replacing the manual process and also only sharpened tools which are used for deep drilling of SAE hardened steel 4144M. The influence of the methods on the tool life is evaluated by analyzing, via MEV and EDS, the wears on the tools and the cutting edge. It has been realized that automatic cutting edge preparation leads to a more uniform rounding radius and consequently geometric form, when compared to the manual process and only sharpened tools. Therefore, there is a smaller and more uniform wear, what increases the tool life.
