Resumen
In this work, the effects of the superficial hardening process of boriding were evaluated on the main properties of AISI D2 steel, as well as the potential use of the samples subjected to such treatment as cutting tool. To do so, first, specimens were machined with standard geometry for fitting into a tool holder, and then they were sharpened to obtain the angles and edges featuring a cutting tool. After this preparation, the samples underwent surface treatment of boriding, followed by quenching and tempering. Subsequently, it was performed a spectrometry with optical emission for analysis of the chemical composition of the sample used. After that, the mechanical characterization of borides layer formed in boriding was done through microscopic analysis (optical and electronic), microhardness and adhesiveness of the hardened layer of cross-sections of the specimens. The boride layer was confirmed and identified with the technique of X-ray diffraction. Finally, it was analyzed the potential use of the specimens treated by boronizing as a cutting tool by using turning tests. The results showed that the boronizing was effective for obtaining a surface layer of high hardness and satisfactory thickness, however the specimens showed premature wear during the machining test. Is attributed to the result a thickness of 50 uM obtained in the hardened layer, since the process of machining is very severe requiring a layer with increased thickness.
