Resumen
To prevent the corrosion on metal surfaces it is common the use of polymer coating to retard this reaction. The polymers used for this purpose usually contain organic solvents, which are toxic. The polyurethane derived from castor oil is an alternative for adhesives not harmful to the environment and health. It is known that ultraviolet irradiation causes damage to the polymers surface. This work evaluated the changes on the hardness and elasticitymodulusof film of polyurethane derived from castor oil on SAE 1020 steel after exposure to UVA and UVC irradiation. To this end, it was used the instrumented indentation. The films subjected to UVA radiation had an increase of the hardness and elasticity modulus comparing to the non-irradiated films. The surface analysis with electron microscope revealed that UVA irradiation caused a brittle fracture behavior of the polyurethane after the indentation. There was no detachment of the film of polyurethane on SAE 1020 steel, therefore the PU derived from castor oil is adequate to use in coating applications that are exposed to UVA or UVC radiation.
