The purpose of this study was to certify the feasibility of use of forest biomass for thermal energy with three forest species Araucaria angustifolia, Pinus taeda and Eucalyptus grandis in its various forms to obtain. Were used the bark of pines and Araucaria pine wood and Araucaria, wood with pine bark, wood with eucalyptus bark and pine wood pellets, comparing them with three other fuels, diesel, electricity and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). By laboratory tests with forest biomass was determined the moisture content, instant chemical composition and higher heating value (PCS). With the aid of mathematical equations was estimated the lower heating value (LHV) and net calorific value (PCL) to determine the amount of power generated by biomass. With the data of the calorific value and consumption was carried out economic analysis of the cost of each fuel energy production. We conclude that the use of forest biomass for thermal power generation is economically viable, environmentally and socially compared to electricity, diesel and LPG.
