This current paper reports a research of the viability of using photovoltaic panels in buildings to generate electricity in the Mato Grosso State (Brazil) compared to Parana State (Brazil), and so to the using of hydroelectric energy, based on residences data using photovoltaic solar energy. It is known that recently Brazil endured a water crisis, with shortages of water and electricity. This fact was due to the sudden depletion of large water reservoirs. Such damages are due, mainly, by construction, responsible for consuming much of natural resources and pollute the environment. However, these facts have given rise to the sustainable trend. Photovoltaic building operating systems were compared in Mato Grosso’s cities Sinop and Rondonopolis and Parana’s capital Curitiba, and set off an electric power production profile in each city. It was soon made energy production comparison by photovoltaic systems and hydroelectric generation by considering technical, environmental and economic characteristics. Thus, the study concluded that Mato Grosso State has greater viability for PV production, however, when choosing between use of photovoltaic solar energy and hydroelectric energy, a site analysis should be done by assessing the potential for each type of source for the best choice for generation. The best alternative reduces impacts to nature as well as being economically viable and still make more efficient buildings, and thus more sustainable.
