The study consisted in the development of a mechanical orthosis composed by rods and gears with the objective of assisting the movement of the pinch in the hands to gain range of motion and strength of the index finger. The research is justified by the difficulty in obtaining orthoses that are modest, comfortable, simple, and light for the user. To do so, bibliographic research was conducted on biomechanical movements and orthoses already developed, thus determining the angles of the joints of the fingers and adapting them to the specific lengths of a real hand. From this, a kinematic analysis was conducted in CAD (Computer Aided Design) to determine the limits of courses and angles, obtaining the conceptual design with the help of product development tools for decision making, as well as the definition of the characteristics of the gears. After that, it was possible to perform the analysis of the force resulting from the forceps with the use of the orthosis. Having that, an orthosis mechanism for the hand was obtained with gears in AISI 1020-degree one low carbon steel and rods capable of assisting the movement of the index finger, making use of the movement of the middle, small and ring fingers. Thus, the study presented fulfilled the general and specific goals, so that there was a gain in movement and strength in the hand for the pinch movement from the developed orthosis.
