Resumen
Waste generation today represents one of the biggest threats to the environment, with millions of tonnes being produced every day around the globe. Considering that among these residues are several recyclable materials such as glass, paper, cans, among others, it is possible to reuse them and thus minimize their presence in the environment and consequently to promote a reduction of environmental pollution and also an improvement in the quality of life of the population . The present study aims to elaborate a proposal for a Solid Waste Management Plan (PGRS) for a municipal school, located in the city of Campo Mourão, Paraná, based on the principles established in the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) prioritizing respectively the non-generation, reduction, reuse, recycling and final disposal of this waste. For this purpose, data collection visits were initially carried out, such as the sources of waste generation, segregation methods, packaging and quantity generated. In a second moment the identification, quantification and characterization of the residues generated during a week of school were carried out, being separated manually in organic waste, recyclables and tailings, for later weighing. Based on these data, it was possible to verify that most of the waste generated during one week was organic, followed by recyclables. However, it was evidenced failures in the segregation of this waste, both by the students and by the school staff. This fact can and should be corrected by inserting environmental education in a more thorough and continuous way in the disciplines and in the school context, so that all who enjoy the environment are reached.
