dc.description.abstractThe artificial dyes are the most used in the industry due to their great variety, and among them, there are the azo dyes, of which class the sunset yellow FCF dye belongs to. Those are the world’s most used food colorings. The effluents generated in the food industries are filled with these dyes due to their low fixation, and the treatments used in the treatment plants are not enough for the removal, making them great polluters of water bodies. Therefore, sugarcane bagasse, which is a highly available residue of agroindustry in Brazil, was used as adsorbent material for sunset yellow FCF dye. The bagasse was treated with KOH and NaOH solutions with concentrations of 1.5 mol L-1 e 3.0 mol L-1 . Thus, It was found that the highest percentages of removal of the sunset yellow FCF dye were obtained by using bagasse treated with NaOH 3.0 mol L-1 , showing removal of 49.50%, and it was followed by bagasse treated with KOH 3.0 mol L -1 , having 46,16 % of removal when the pH was at about 2. However, as an untreated sample was used, it was found that the efficiency presented was expressive at 45.86% when the pH was at about 1. The results show that the removal of dyes by using sugarcane bagasse as adsorbent is effective and feasible, due to the low cost of the treatment, as well as the untreated bagasse becomes interesting, since it presents high removal without cost with prior treatment.
