Resumen
Since the advent of power plants and power substations there was the need for system monitoring, which was initially given by the synoptic panels showing a few status signals that aided the operation and maintenance of plants. With the need of the development of protection systems in power substations was the IEDs emerged - Electronic Intelligent Device (Intelligent Electronic Device) and communication protocols for the power systems. These new elements turned conventional systems in digital technologies capable of transmitting information more quickly and efficiently, being able to ensure the safety systems, increased speed data transmission and especially decrease deployment and maintenance costs. In this context, this paper aims to present the advancement of technology in substation automation, and the modernization of old substations (Scan Substations), addressing the applications of some protocols that came meet this need of the energy market, as well as the Modbus, DNP-3 and IEC 61850.
