Resumen
In Brazil various stations add aluminum polychloride on biological sludge to improve the efficiency of coagulation/flocculation and clarification and add sodium hypochlorite in the treated effluent for disinfection. In this study, analyses of samples in different operational conditions of a WWTP were performed. The samples were acquired in order to carry out assessments of physicochemical parameters and toxicity. The samples were within the limits allowed by legislation, such as the physicochemical parameters and the load organic matter (BOD5) removal efficiency. However, when toxicity assessments were performed using Vibrio fischeri and Daphnia magna, several samples showed toxicity factor. Pearson positive correlations indicated that toxicity by Vibrio fischeri was significantly correlated with the concentrations of aluminum (0.97) and chlorine (0.93) and negative correlations with the concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) (-0.73). The toxicity to D. magna was negatively correlated with the pH (-0.89) and the BOD5 (-0.95).The organisms were compared for sensitivity to physical and chemical parameters and Daphnia magna was more sensitive to the parameters of pH and do are the Vibrio fischeri had to be more sensitive to residual chlorine, COD, BOD5, ammonia nitrogen and aluminum. Regression models were adjusted for toxicity factor as dependent variable and physicochemical parameters as independent variables.
