Resumen
The green foundry sand after demoulding the parts is the main residue of the foundry industries, being a serious environmental problem that the sector has faced in recent years. The large amount of this waste generated associated with the high cost for disposal and storage is a serious economic and environmental problem. Because it is composed of sand (silica / quartz), coal (Cardiff), bentonite and impregnated iron after the production of the pieces, this material shows promise for the synthesis of zeolites from alternative sources of silicon, taking advantage of the remaining coal and activating it. o in part of the process of synthesis of the zeolitic material. This work aims to use this foundry residual for the synthesis of adsorbent materials, with the objective of synthesizing faujaside zeolite, making it possible to obtain iron / iron oxide and activated carbon in the same synthesis process. The method used for synthesis was alkaline fusion at a temperature of 500 ° C with subsequent addition of sodium aluminate as a source of aluminum at a ratio of 1: 1, thus obtaining faujasite zeolite, endo characterized by X-ray diffraction, Spectroscopy in Fourier Transform Infrared and thermogravimetric analysis. The application of the zeolite obtained in the softening of hard waters allowed to evaluate the reduction of the calcium concentration, effect of the contact time, the effect of the pH of the medium and the amount of zeolite mass added, demonstrating to be a promising material for the treatment of the hardness of the Water.
