Resumen
This study aims to study the representation of the women freedom in the novel Gabriela, Cravo e Canela (1958), by Jorge Amado. This work intends to show the relationship between the main character, Gabriela, with the freedom and social oppression. Represented by the act of putting shoes on and taking them off. It was made a brief comparison between Gabriela’s shoes and Cinderella’s, character of Grimm’s fairy tale. An analysis was made about the Brazlilian women in mid1925, more specifically, in the town of Ilhéus, and their relationship with the society they belong to seeking a better understanding about how the skin color builds a stereotype which would establish what would be her role in that society. However, the main focus of this study will be on the character Gabriela and her two lives – single and married- and how the social conventions have an influence on her in the two particular/ distinct stages of her life.
