Resumen
This course conclusion paper considers the necessity of representing female death in Berenice, Morella and Ligeia's characters by Edgar Allan Poe concerning the sublime, by recognizing it as an artistic expression and problematizing its banalization in some art criticism areas; Poe's gothic-romantic is seen as a propeller of rupture of this conservative culture. The theoretical author’s works used to discuss art are Arnold Hauser (1984; 1988) and Ersnt Gombrich (2011); on death, Christian Riegel (1999) and Philippe Ariès (2012). The gothic-romantic is based on Edmund Burke (1992), Fred Botting (2005; 2014) and Howard Lovecraft (1987); The feminine characters of Poe's gothics were analyzed by meaning of the theories of Ruth Brandão (2006). That being said, this study intends to display death as a liberator of the feminine figure in the arts, bringing a better understanding of the displays in the gothic-romantic work.
