Through documentary analysis this work intends to present a case study to evaluate the need for continuity of the air injection system in partial loads of the U01 turbine of the ITAIPU plant. In order to do so, we will analyze the impacts on the human resources involved in the maintenance of the system, impact on the cavitation effect in the turbine rotor compared to the other generating unit without the system and analysis of the feasibility of continuity of this system in relation to its cost. The work begins with a briefdescription of the basic concepts of preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance and how these concepts are worked within ITAIPU's maintenance management system. A second part reviews the cavitation phenomena and the core vortex that occurs under different load conditions in Francis type turbines and how the use of partial load compressors can reduce the influence of these effects. In a third stage of the work, the history of preventive and corrective maintenance in the compressor of the air injection system in partial load of the generating unit U01 is raised and the operating time of the equipment is raised within the same time interval, resulting in an approximate 12 times greater number of hours engaged in corrective and preventive maintenance of the system than hours of operation of the compressor. In addition, the history of cavitation erosion in the turbine rotor of U01 (with partially charged air injection system) and U15 (without air injection system) is also related and their erosion rate compared If there was a significant influence of the use of the air injection system, in the attenuation of the erosion generated by the cavitation effect.
