Noise-depleting environments may present difficulties in carrying out activities in the face ofdaily noise pollution. The situation can be worsen by the presence of machines and equipment in the workplace surroundings. There are several methods and materials that allow attenuation of unwanted noise. However, the technical knowledge about the relation between material characteristics and its behavior in extreme conditions contributes to the best performance and risk reduction. The present study addresses the need for safe noise isolation due to the fire principle generated by inappropriate use of acoustic materials. The noise source refers to an air compressor, which is installed near a speech-language clinic. This clinic recently suffered a fire during the installation of acoustic foams in one of the treatment rooms. The fire did not have larger proportions due to the small amount of foam applied and the occasional presence of a trained professional, who extinguished the fire promptly. In face of the need for acoustic insulation and the occurrence of fire in the clinic, the present work addresses the analysis of the fire load increase generated by the application of acoustic foams and possible solutions for noise attenuation appropriate to the concerned environment. To establish these measures were carried out measurements of the sound pressure levels in all the meeting rooms and in the air compressor. From the results it is possible to determine the combination of absorbent materials to compose the acoustic insulation.
