Resumen
This monograph has the purpose of analyzing the electric sector and the motivators and advantages of implementing smart grid systems and smart grids in such sectors in Brazil and in the World. The energy sector can be explained in three parts: the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Technology is the key part on the development of these areas, looking forward to attend the demand and needs of the today’s society when considering a more accessible energy supply, new ways of accessing information, renewable power generation and micro generation. From the Utility point of view, it is as well linked to energy efficiency and reducing the losses on transmission and distribution, more efficiency on attending the customer demand, outages, accidents, raising the network stability, better control and brining education of the society in terms of tariffs and energy quality. In Brazil, recently the first big project of Smartgrid was made official, the biggest in South America, marking the beginning of a new era in this sector for this region. In the world, the biggest project in history aims to have eighty percent of the energy consumers in Japan to be connected to a SmartGrid until the year 2017. Some countries already have the vision of having not only the electrical sector intelligent, but gas, water, public lighting, creating the concept of SmartCity.
