Resumen
The increase in the world’s population is generating more and more repercussions on the environment. One of these effects is the deposition of open-air tailings in landfills and sewage treatment plants. This material, when decomposing, generates gases responsible for the greenhouse effect, and if not destined and treated properly it causes great damages to the environment and also to the health of the populations. With this in mind, several studies are carried out each year to transform this waste into a sustainable solution. An alternative is the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter from domestic sanitary sewage, which after the correct treatment becomes biogas, which can be used as a source of electric, thermal and vehicular energy, as well as directly contribute to basic sanitation and sustainable development. The municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon has a collection network and partially treats its sanitary sewage since mid-2013, however, it does not have mechanisms to take advantage of the methane produced in the treatment lagoons. The present study had the objective of analyzing the technical viability for the implantation of a biogas plant in the sewage treatment plant of the municipality. The results demonstrate that the generated biogas could be used as a source of energy generation, thus bringing savings to the municipality, improving the quality of life of the population, as well as generating jobs and income.
