Carbon sequestration is a mechanism for carbon dioxide removal and storage, thus reducing it’s quantity in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is part of the Green House Gases (GHG), known for disturbing the energetic balance between the earth and the atmosphere, causing climate changes through the greenhouse effect. Due to carbon dioxide major abundance among the GHG, it became necessary to improve techniques to quantify it. This paper has as an objective to characterize the vegetation relating it to the concentration of carbon in a mountain semideciduous seasonal forest patch. The study took place in a private property where approximately 1500 m2 were used and divided in 3 portions (A, B and C) with different altitudes and slopes. For each portion, DBH (diameter at breat height) was measured from subjects bigger than 2,5 cm, herbs and litter. After every measurement, the data was separated and organized in 5 forest stratum: living trees, standing dead trees, fallen dead trees, herbs and litter. The collected biomass in loco was transported in bags properly labeled to a stove in the Ecology Laboratory at Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná campus Campo Mourão so its weight became constant. Inventoried data were used in allometric equations, which is an indirect, quantification method to estimate carbon content through calculation and conversion of diameter, length, dry mass and fresh mass of each subject. Using this adapted methodology, it was estimated in a first moment the total of biomass and, afterwards, the content of stored carbon. Portion A had the greater quantity of stored carbon, 60,83 t/ha, followed by portion C, 29,94 t/ha and, lastly, portion B, 17,46 t/ha. Together, the three portion contributed to a total of 108,23 t/ha estimated for a year, which is considerably expressive for a forest patch.
