Resumen
Work is an essential part of people’s lives, being configured as a factor in the construction of the individual identity. However, work does not always allows growth, recognition and professional independence, as it can cause dissatisfaction, disinterest, irritation and exhaustion problems, which can lead to burnout. To understand the interference of ones job, the objective of the research is to evaluate the existence of burnout in private college professors. To that end, the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Educators Survey (MBI-ES) was applied, which together with questions for profile identification, composed the research questionnaire. This questionnaire was sent to 679 professors and a return of 8.84% was obtained, which totaled the voluntary participation of 60 professors. From the data collection, the three subscales of burnout were analyzed, the emotional exhaustion, the depersonalization and the reduced personal accomplishment. In addition to the analysis of burnout, the profile of the professors participating in the research was described, based on information from the questionnaires. With this, it was possible to verify if there was presence of burnout in the private colleges professors who were surveyed. The results indicated that there is evidence of burnout among the professors, since there is a moderate level of the emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment, but a low level of depersonalization. However, it was not possible to draw a profile of the professors affected by the syndrome. Therefore the research was not sufficient to establish a correlation between burnout and the profile of the professors more susceptible to it.
