Resumen
Along with the technological development and economic pressures of the current market, the industries suffer demands for higher productivity rates, demanding an optimization in the processing of materials, such as the reduction of costs and the manufacturing of excellent products. In general, all the steps of the materials manufacturing requires some type of tool, which, due to the severe requests during use, must be thermally treated. Thus, it is proposed to study the quenching and tempering treatments of the alloy AISI D6, since it is the tool steel for cold working more industrially applied in Brazil. Besides, becomes relevant the study of
quenching and tempering of the alloy SAE 1045, because it is a medium carbon steel, widely applied and with low cost. The parameters involving austenitizing of the material influence the hardenability, the grain size and concentration of retained austenite after cooling. For this reason, it is important to investigate the behavior of the material by altering the austenitizing temperature therefore affect its mechanical properties. The increase in austenitizing temperature generated a slight increase in the hardness of the steel AISI D6, due to increased
dissolution of carbides. The SAE 1045 steel showed a hardness lower than expected in all treatment conditions.
