Resumen
The objective of this research is to record the life history of a traditional artisan from Jujuy with an extensive and significant career –as well as his family and inter- and intra-community environment–, from which we will be able to identify the context in which he incorporated his knowledge, the way in which he could find new meanings for it through time, and its cosmovision: consubstantial part of all cultural phenomena. Taking the record of this history as a basis, we plan to design guidelines for this textile activity to become meaningful for other members of the community who might be interested in receiving this legacy and taking it up as a sustainable labour option. Nowadays, the artisans who weave in the traditional looms in Quebrada de Humahuaca and Puna in Jujuy continue reproducing, with their skilful hands, the Andean textile legacy of which they are privileged bearers. However, our ethnographic survey in the 2016 campaign has confronted us with several issues: In 2003, the Quebrada de Humahuaca was declared Natural and Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This fact stimulated tourism considerably, a situation that we are interested in dealing with from the textile handcraft aspect, and produced an increase in the supply of pieces –in local shops, street markets and stalls–, mostly industrial manufacture produced exclusively abroad. This phenomenon, as expected, has relegated the work of the traditional craftsman to the background, which is why its labour insertion, based on ancestral knowledge, has become very complicated due to a marked asymmetry between industrial and artisan goods, placing the latter in a position of inequality. These partial results have allowed us to verify that these artisans represent a key element in the Andean root, demonstrated from the archaeological record to the quality and the current design of the textiles produced there. We have also observed that –although there have been experiences in this regard carried out by official and private bodies– these artisans have not been trained to self-manage this work at the family level to face the new challenges related to the actions aimed at learning about the forces (supply and demand) that interact in the market, and, consequently, in the commercialization of their production, being these aspects a fundamental condition to seek the definite establishment of the artisan and his family in their original habitat.
