dc.descriptionThis essay is a summary of a new research regarding the Sale of the Flag, a watershed event in the history of Ecuador. This international scandal involved the assistance provided by Ecuadorian politicians and bureaucrats to facilitate the illegal sale of a warship, the Esmeralda by Chile to Japan, in the middle of the First Sino-Japanese war. The affair caused the fall of the government of the Luis Cordero and allowed the long delayed of Eloy Alfaro to the power. Despite its obvious importance, the episode has not been examined in detail. This article attempts to highlight the deep and unexplored connections between three key characters of the affair: José María Plácido Caamaño, ex president of the Republic and head of the corrupt political cartel known as the Argolla, Charles Ranlett Flint, the well-known American Industrialist and arms dealer, and Fidel George Pierra Urgellés, a Cuban merchant and agent for Argolla and Flint as well.en-US
dc.descriptionEste ensayo resume una investigación realizada sobre la Venta de la Bandera, un acontecimiento decisivo en la historia del Ecuador. Ese escándalo internacional consistió en la asistencia prestada por los políticos y burócratas ecuatorianos para facilitar la venta ilegal de un buque de guerra, la Esmeralda, de Chile a Japón, en medio de la Primera Guerra Chino-Japonesa. El affaire provocó la caída del gobierno de Luis Cordero, y permitió, finalmente, la muy aplazada llegada de Eloy Alfaro al poder. A pesar de su evidente importancia, el escándalo del Esmeralda no se ha examinado en detalle. Este artículo pone de relieve los profundos e inexplorados vínculos entre tres personajes de la clave de la historia: José María Plácido Caamaño, ex presidente de la República y jefe del corrupto grupo conocido como la Argolla, Charles Ranlett Flint, conocido empresario estadounidense y traficante de armas, y Fidel George Pierra Urgellés, un comerciante cubano y agente tanto de la Argolla como de Flint.es-ES
