Resumen
After a look at some questions concerning the problem of social change, I endeavor to show how the Brazilian collectivity can be interpreted two ways. As a nation, Brazil is constantly changing, and its tendency is to be placed among modern, individualist nations. But as a society, Brazil remains unchangeable. Economists, political scientists, and sociologists tend to interpret the nation Brazil, forgetting that there is also a society Brazil. Social anthropologists, in their interpretations, tend to do precisely the opposite, reducing Brazil to a consideration of Brazilian society alone. I have endeavored to show that when we apply sociology to Brazil, we speak of two collectivities: the nation and the society. It is futile to try to discuss one in the place of the other. In order to arrive at a coherent, deep understanding of the social change and transformations which the country is undergoing, Brazil must be interpreted as a modern nation (founded on the individual) and as a society (based on the ties of patronage and friendship which are equally pervasive in everyday life).
