Resumen
The article presents the results of a comparison between profiles of white and black defendants who were indicted for robbery with aggravating circunstances in the municipality of São Paulo in 1990. It is part of a study earlier results of which have already been published (Adorno, 1995). Comparative analysis indicates that there are no statistically significant differences between the two social profiles, except for the fact that there are higher rates of illiteracy and unemployment among black defendants. These differences provide no basis for the hypothesis that black defendants are naturally given to violent crime, in comparison with white defendants. They also point to different forms of access to the world of legality for these two racial groups.
