Wide-area monitoring and analysis of inter-area oscillations using the Hilbert-Huang transform

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease disproportionately affects the poor in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Mexico exemplifies the difficulties faced in supporting Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) and providing equitable patient care, despite recent attempts at health reform. The objective of this study is to document the challenges faced by uninsured, poor Mexican families when attempting to access RRT. Methods: The article takes an ethnographic approach, using interviewing and observation to generate detailed accounts of the problems that accompany attempts to secure care. The study, based in the state of Jalisco, comprised interviews with patients, their caregivers, health and social care professionals, among others. Observations were carried out in both clinical and social settings. Results: In the absence of organised health information and stable pathways to renal care, patients and their families work extraordinarily hard and at great expense to secure care in a mixed public-private healthcare system. As part of this work, they must navigate challenging health and social care environments, negotiate treatments and costs, resource and finance healthcare and manage a wide range of formal and informal health information. Conclusions: Examining commonalities across pathways to adequate healthcare reveals major failings in the Mexican system. These systemic problems serve to reproduce and deepen health inequalities. A system, in which the costs of renal care are disproportionately borne by those who can least afford them, faces major difficulties around the sustainability and resourcing of RRTs. Attempts to increase access to renal therapies, therefore, need to take into account the complex social and economic demands this places on those who need access most. This paper further shows that ethnographic studies of the concrete ways in which healthcare is accessed in practice provide important insights into the plight of CKD patients and so constitute an important source of evidence in that effort. Wnt proteins include a numerous family of secretion glycoprotein which joint to Frizzled receptors and Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor-related Protein, in order to stabilize the critical ? -catenin protein, and to initiate an intricate signaling cascade, which is related to multiple nucleo-cytoplasmatic processes. Alterations in the canonical Wnt- ? -catenin signaling pathway have been associated with variations in a number of proteins participating in this route, or with activation / inactivation of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, which explain different processes of tumorigenesis, in addition to a number of malformations and human diseases. Comprehensive monitoring of large-scale power systems bymeans of properly placed time-synchronized phasor measurement units (PMUs) providesthe opportunity to analyze and characterize complex inter-area swing dynamics involvingall or most of the power system.Wide-area real-time monitoring may prove invaluable in power system dynamicstudies by giving a quick assessment of the damping and frequency content of dominantsystem modes after critical contingencies. Measured data, however, may exhibit quitedifferent dynamics at each system location or exhibit abrupt changes, dynamicirregularities, or be complicated by nonlinear trends or noise. Traditional Fourier andProny methods for system identification are unable to resolve the localized nature ofthese processes and hence provide little useful information concerning the nature ofnoisy, time-varying oscillatory processes.In this Chapter, a new method for analyzing the temporal dynamics of nonlinear andnon-stationary inter-area oscillations using a local empirical mode decomposition (EMD)method and the Hilbert transform is presented. Two novel algorithms are developed toaddress nonlinear and non-stationary issues. The first method is a local implementation ofthe empirical mode decomposition technique. The second is an algorithm to compute theHilbert transform using finite impulse response (FIR) filters. By combining theseapproaches, the method can be used to analyze complex signals for which theconventional assumptions of linearity and stationarity may not apply and can beimplemented for on-line estimation of modal damping and frequency using synchronizedwide-area measurement systems. The physical mechanism underlying nonlinear time-varying inter-area oscillations isinvestigated and methods to characterize the observed oscillatory phenomena in terms ofphysically meaningful modal components are proposed. Emphasis is placed onidentifying modal content in the presence of noise and nonlinear trends. Issuesconcerning the implementation of the method and numerical considerations are alsodiscussed.As specific applications, data obtained from PMU measurements from a real event inthe northern systems of the Mexican interconnected system are used to examine thepotential usefulness of nonlinear time series analysis techniques to characterize thespatio-temporal characteristics of the observed oscillations and to determine the natureand propagation of the system disturbance.
