Resumen
We studied six Y-linked short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) to describe the internal diversity of the Amerindian haplogroup Q-M3 in 129 males from eight Mexican populations. The low gene diversity in the Huichol tribe demonstrated the effects of genetic drift, attributable to geographic isolation and founder effect. The presence of two principal paternal lineages supported the historical and anthropometric records, which indicate that Huichols were formed by the fusion of two ancestral Mexican tribes. Moreover, genetic distances and close relationships of haplotypes between Huichols and Tarahumaras were in agreement with their linguistic affiliation. The high genetic diversity of the Purépechas and wide distribution of haplotypes along the constructed network-joining tree suggest that the present genetic composition was influenced by Purépecha dominance in western Mesoamerica. The Y-haplotypes shared between populations suggest that, among the Amerindian tribes studied herein, the paternal genetic pool of Nahuas could have contributed more importantly to the European-admixed population, the Mexican-Mestizos. The promoter region of uridine diphosphate glycosyltransferase 1 (UGT1A1) gene contains a normal A (TA) 6TAA element; variations in this motif (A(TA) 7/8TAA) are generally associated with this disorder. This is a report of the varied effects of GS in a Mexican Mestizo family with a non-common (TA) 8 repeat in this population. The proposita and her mother showed (TA) 7/(TA) 8 genotype, while her father and sister were (TA) 6/(TA) 7, but only the proposita showed clinical manifestations. This report supports that the (TA) 7 and (TA) 8 are necessary, but not enough to explain the features of GS. There are probably additional genetic variations ie, the presence of " modifier" genes or one can speculate that an oligogenetic trait can contribute to the expression of the final phenotype.",,,,,,,,,"http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12104/45717","http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-84865956924&partnerID=40&md5=0eaf04c849ee66ae20c5066e1b76da0c",,,,,,"1",,"West Indian Medical Journal",,"81 83",,"61",,"Scopus WOS",,,,,,"Gilbert syndrome; Hyperbilirubinaemia; Microsatellite; Ugt1a1",,,,,,"Wayward effect of polymorphism (TA)8 in the promoter region of UGT1A1 Gene in a Mexican family",,"Article"

It has been demonstrated that indirect indicators of adiposity such as body mass index are associated with metabolic disorders including cardiovascular risk factors. The objective was to evaluate the association of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with cardiovascular risk factors in obese children and adolescents. Methods. Cross-sectional study in 115 obese children and adolescents (BMI >+ 2.0 SD). Weight, height and waist circumference were measured. Blood pressure (BP), serum lipid profile, glucose and insulin were determined and HOMA-IR index was calculated. The correlation between BMI and WC with biochemical parameters and BP was identified; multivariate models were performed to evaluate the association of BMI and WC with cardiovascular risk factors. Results. Mean age was 9.75 3.1 years. A significant positive correlation of BMI and WC with BP, insulin and HOMA-IR was identified. In multivariate models, both BMI and WC showed an association with these alterations. Conclusions. FOS is constituted by 100 m of multimodal fiber coupled to a transducer element based on the electro-optic effect with a double pass configuration of the light wave through a Bi12TiO20 (BTO) fotorrefractive crystal. To guarantee the double pass, a back-reflective prism with high stability to environmental changes of temperature is incorporate to the transducer element. The double reflection of the light wave in the prism allows the BTO to work in a wide linear region of the transfer function. To prove the feasibility of this FOS, a periodic wave of AC and a transitory event, both of high voltages, applied to an aluminium tube were measured from a distance of 1 mt. It is demonstrated that the proposed sensor is robust, linear, and stable against the variations of temperature and of high sensibility for applications of high voltage telemetry.",,,,,,"10.1117/12.674672",,,"http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12104/45702","http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-33645224227&partnerID=40&md5=7b3420100dcf68efa6f53cb53a761603",,,,,,,,"Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering",,,,"6046",,"Scopus",,,,,,"Electro-optic Sensor; Fiber optical sensor; High voltage; Pockels effect",,,,,,"Voltage sensor based on optical fiber and the electro-optic effect for high voltage telemetry applications in industrial automation",,"Conference Paper"

The water level of Lake Chapala reflects to some extent the integral processes in temperature and precipitation within the Lerma-Chapala watershed. Hidden periodicities in the monthly time series included peaks of 0.5 to 22 years in the normalized spectra of temperature and precipitation oscillations, with confidence limit above 90%. Within the 2-22 years range, the periods of 2 to 7 years can be related to "El Niño" phenomenon. The periods of 9 to 22 years may be related to solar influence. Hourly measurements of temperature, relative humidity, speed and wind direction were used to study "El Niño" in Guadalajara. During "El Niño" year, there were a large number of hours recording temperatures over 25°C. Higher than normal temperatures were recorded from the beginning of March 1998. Low humidity values, less than 30%, were evident from late January till June of the same year. A total of 87 waterbirds species were recorded, 78 in Agua Dulce and 73 in Ermitaño. The higher species richness and abundance was observed during winter, when migratory species arrived. Most species prefered shallow waters, except seabirds which prefered protected areas such as dunes in Agua Dulce. Other groups, like ducks and related species, prefered low salinity areas, for example in the south-east area of Ermitaño. The higher abundance of the shorebirds was found when the water level on the estuary was low. In particular, the analysis of white blood cell (WBC) images has engaged researchers from fields of medicine and computer vision alike. Since WBCs can be approximated by a quasicircular form, a circular detector algorithm may be successfully applied. This paper presents an algorithm for the automatic detection of white blood cells embedded into complicated and cluttered smear images that considers the complete process as a circle detection problem. The approach is based on a nature-inspired technique called the electromagnetism- like optimization (EMO) algorithm which is a heuristic method that follows electromagnetism principles for solving complex optimization problems. The proposed approach uses an objective function which measures the resemblance of a candidate circle to an actual WBC. Guided by the values of such objective function, the set of encoded candidate circles are evolved by using EMO, so that they can fit into the actual blood cells contained in the edge map of the image. Experimental results from blood cell images with a varying range of complexity are included to validate the efficiency of the proposed technique regarding detection, robustness, and stability.
