Resumen
Rituximab (R) has changed the prognosis of patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in developed countries, but its role has not been analyzed in underprivileged circumstances. One hundred and two patients with NHL treated in a developing country were analyzed: 28 patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) and 74 with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLCL). Patients were treated upfront with either cyclo- phosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) or R-CHOP; the decision to employ R depending solely on the ability of patients to defray it. In DLCL, 42 were given CHOP and 32 R-CHOP, whereas in FL, 19 were given CHOP and 9 R-CHOP. The impact of the addition of R was found to be clearer in FL than in DLCL. In patients with DLCL, the overall survival (OS) was 87% at 80 months for those treated with R-CHOP and 84% at 145 months for those treated with CHOP (not significant). In patients with FL, the OS was 89% at 88 months for those treated with R-CHOP and 71% at 92 months for those treated with CHOP (P50.05). In a multivariate analysis, other variables which were identified to be associated with the OS were IPI and number of cycles in DLCL. It is concluded that R produced a mild positive impact in the OS of patients with FL, but not in those with DLCL. Since the addition of R results in a 36-fold increase in treatment costs, these observations may be important to decide therapeutic approaches in NHL patients living in underprivileged circumstances. We study this situation with numerical simulations of a jet in a sidewind of uniform density but linearly increasing velocity as one moves from the source. We use a new three-dimensional hydrodynamic code on a binary adaptive grid. We consider two different models, one with a cocoon expansion speed higher and one with expansion speed lower than the ISM speed. We find that the model with high cocoon expansion speed is similar to results from previous calculations without a sidewind, except for minor asymmetries. However, model B with the slow expansion speed and fast wind speed shows considerable qualitative differences. The jet hits and bounces off the dense cooling envelope, which is dragged by the sidewind into the straight path of the jet. The path of the jet within the cocoon is straight as long as the extended hot cocoon acts as a shield. Once the jet hits the cold envelope of the cocoon it is bent directly by the ram pressure of the ambient medium and follows a parabola of the third degree, which we derive as an analytical approximation for the path. The region where the jet hits the envelope is the start of strong radio emission. This point moves towards the source with age of the jet and its bending angle. We therefore find a possible observable correlation between the distance of the first strong radio knot and the overall bending of jets in Seyfert galaxies. A comparison of our results with observations of Mrk 573 shows that the essential structural and spectral features can be reproduced by choosing an appropriate viewing angle and evolutionary stage. Looking approximately along the original jet direction a structure is found which strongly resembles an ionization cone. Hence caution should prevail when interpreting these sorts of structure within the narrow-line region of Seyfert galaxies.",,,,,,"10.1046/j.1365-8711.2001.04120.x",,,"http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12104/42425","http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-0038233015&partnerID=40&md5=ae53df1544544eddb626377e3d8b4d2c",,,,,,"1",,"Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society",,"166 176",,"322",,"Scopus WOS",,,,,,"Galaxies: active; Galaxies: individual: Mrk 573; Galaxies: Seyfert; ISM: clouds; ISM: jets and outflows; Methods: numerical",,,,,,"Jet cocoons in rotating Seyfert galaxies: Adaptive three-dimensional hydrodynamics",,"Article"

Stable latexes containing small particles (35-50 nm) of poly(vinyl acetate) with average number molar masses of (4-5) 105 g/mol are obtained. Analysis of the molar mass distributions (MMD) indicates that the controlling chain growth termination mechanism is chain transfer to monomer, and not to polymer, which is the dominant termination mechanism for the emulsion polymerization of this monomer, especially at high conversions. Deconvolution of the MMD curves and measurement of the radius of gyration as a function of molar mass show that more than 80% of the final polymer is linear, produced by chain transfer to monomer, whereas the rest may be branched, probably formed by chain transfer to polymer or by terminal double bond reactions. The population of linear polymer decreases with decreasing reaction temperature, but it is independent of initiator and monomer concentrations.",,,,,,"10.1021/ma991011j",,,,"http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-0343655384&partnerID=40&md5=abfea909087bbcf7e2aec8d817c11f06 http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12104/42437",,,,,,"8",,"Macromolecules",,"2848 2854",,"33",,"Scopus",,,,,,,,,,"Kinetic description of the free radical polymerization of vinyl acetate in cationic microemulsions",,,,"Article",

Three different surfactants were used: AOT, a cationic surfactant, DDAB (didodecyldimethylammonium bromide) and a mixture of two cationic surfactants, DDAB and DTAB (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide). The polymerization was carried out at 60 °C using either a water-soluble (K2S2O8) or an oil-soluble (azobisisobutyronitrile or AIBN) initiator. Copolymerization of acrylic acid and styrene was achieved with the three surfactants only when AIBN was used. Peralta, R.D.",,"2014",,"Vinyl acetate (VAc) was polymerized in microemulsion using sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) as surfactant and n-butanol (n-BuOH) as the cosurfactant (1:1, wt/wt) with potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator. The effects of monomer, surfactant, and initiator concentration, as well as the temperature on the kinetics, particle size, and molar masses were studied. It was observed that polymerization rate increases as monomer, initiator, and temperature increases; however, the opposite was observed as surfactant concentration increases. Average particle diameters (Dp) < 50 nm and polymers with weight average molar masses (Mw) between 2.7 × 105 and 7.5 × 105 g/mol were obtained. For low amounts of stabilizing agents (AOT and n-BuOH), a bimodal molar mass distribution (MMD) was obtained. As n-butanol concentration increased, Mw decreases and a monomodal MMD was observed, which can be explained because chain transfer events are promoted by the presence of n-BuOH. A thermodynamic model was implemented to simulate the partitioning of VAc in the presence of n-BuOH between the phases throughout polymerization. It was found from simulations that microemulsion droplets are depleted fast at 5 % conversion and, due to the high water solubility of VAc, most of the monomer (70 %) and n-BuOH (97 %) reside in the aqueous phase at the beginning of polymerization, which indicates that both homogeneous and micellar nucleation are present. © 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.",,,,,,"10.1007/s00396-014-3479-2",,,,"http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-84925488780&partnerID=40&md5=68484c93f595e6924fd65e3838651d03 http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12104/42444",,,,,,"2",,"Colloid and Polymer Science",,"655 664",,"293",,"Scopus",,,,,,"AOT-surfactant; Kinetics; Microemulsion polymerization; Monomer partitioning; n-BuOH; Vinyl acetate",,,,"Kinetics and monomer partitioning during polymerization of vinyl acetate in microemulsions stabilized with AOT and n-butanol",,,,"Article",

Iron deficiency adversely affects thyroid metabolism and reduces iodine prophylaxis efficacy in areas of endemic goiter. The therapeutic response to oral iodized oil is impaired in goitrous children with iron deficiency anemia. In pregnant women with chronic iodine deficiency, endemic goiter may aggravate anemia, while the severity of subclinical hypothyroidism increases in the presence of anemia. Parasites such as Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiuria and hookworms are the most common, chronic, subclinical infections in childhood. Nutritional deficiencies are important determining factors for fetal growth, body composition and childhood development. Some stages are more vulnerable than others, and the most vulnerable stages may differ according to particular nutritional deficiencies. Iodine deficiency may be associated with alterations in the progeny's psychoneuro-intellectual, developmental prognosis. ID and IDA are estimated to affect about half of the world's population, and young children are among the most severely affected. A possible relationship exists between iodine deficiency and toxoplasma infection. Hookworm species being transmitted in a community influence the burden of IDA and should be considered when prioritizing and planning programs for hookworm and anemia control. Salt iodization is the preferred strategy in eliminating IDD as a public health problem, and universal iodization is the target for the beginning of the twenty-first century. " 2009 Elsevier Inc.
