ResumenEl artículo aborda los inicios de Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV), el canal de televisión más popular y emblemático de la historia de Venezuela. Fundada en 1953 por el ornitólogo estadounidense William H. Phelps, la empresa surge en medio de censura impuesta por la dictadura del régimen de Marcos Pérez Jiménez, en un entorno geopolítico caracterizado por la Guerra Fría. RCTV se convierte en cuna de artistas, periodistas y espacios televisivos novedosos que impactaron en la cultura audiovisual del país. El espíritu científico y emprendedor de sus fundadores la erige como gigante de la industria venezolana de medios, gracias a que desarrolló la red de transmisión más amplia de la nación y productos televisivos de vanguardia AbstractThe article addresses the beginnings of Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV), the most popular and emblematic television channel in the history of Venezuela. Founded in 1953 by the American ornithologist William H. Phelps, the company arises in the midst of censorship imposed by the dictatorship of the Marcos Pérez Jiménez regime, in a geopolitical environment characterized by the Cold War. RCTV becomes the cradle of artists, journalists and innovative television spaces that impacted the audiovisual culture of the country. The scientific and entrepreneurial spirit of its founders makes it a giant of the Venezuelan media industry, thanks to the fact that it developed the nation's widest broadcast network and cutting-edge television products.
