Las estadísticas de los años potenciales de vida perdidos hablan de un serio problema de salud pública que, sin embargo, no constituye una prioridad para los organismos internacionales que diseñan las orientaciones fundamentales de las políticas de población y desarrollo; las prioridades de atención se concentran en la población materno infantil y en los programas relacionados con la salud reproductiva, sin asignarle mucho interés al hecho de que es entre la población con edades comprendidas entre 15 y 64 años en la que dicha pérdida adquiere dimensiones impresionantes. En Venezuela, la población que murió a edades dentro de ese intervalo sumó en 1970 un total de 474 819 años potenciales de vida perdidos; en 1995 esa cifra alcanzó los 928 568 años, y sin embargo, para el año 2000, los programas del Ministerio de Salud y Desarrollo Social privilegiaban la atención materno infantil y la distribución de anticonceptivos. The statistics of lost potential years of life speak of a serious problem of public health that, however, it doesn't constitute a priority for the international organisms that design the fundamental orientations of population's politics and development; the priorities of attention concentrate on the maternal and infantile population and in the programs related with the reproductive health, without assigning a lot of interest to the fact that it is among the population with ages between 15 and 64 years in the one that this loss acquires impressive dimensions. In Venezuela, the population that died at ages inside that interval added in 1970 a 474 819 of lost potential years of life; in 1995 that figure reached the 928 568 years, and however, for the year 2000, the programs of the Ministry of Health and Social Development privileged the infantile and maternal attention and the distribution of contraceptives.
