ABSTRACT; The hypothesis of a special power function, the Zipf`s law, describing the population size distribution of Venezuela´s cities during the 1936-1990 period is re-examined. Such a distribution would imply scale invariant growth process. The application of a robust statistical test suggests that the distribution gradually deviated from the Zipf model since 1961. Moreover, city growth rates showed a moderate negative correlation with population size since 1971. The negative correlation was more intense in the largest cities. These results together with high turnover of cities size ranges and a previously detected presence of homogeneous groups of cities by size, are compatible with the predictions included in the ecological theory of complex systems. | |
