Bibliometric analysis of the scientific production published in Peruvian dental journals

Introduction: Knowledge production and the need for its dissemination are crucial to ensure the efficacy and quality of dental care. Objective: Conduct a bibliometric analysis aimed at describing the scientific production published in three Peruvian dental journals. Methods: A bibliometric study was conducted whose units of analysis were Peruvian dental journals published in the period 2015-2019. Scientific production was approached by year, type of publication, topic, characteristics of authors and ethical considerations. Results: A total 491 papers were analyzed, of which 184 (37.47%) were retrieved from the Revista Estomatológica Herediana, 168 (34.21%) from Odontología Sanmarquina, and 139 (28.31%) from Revista Kiru. Original papers were the most commonly published type with 254 (51.73%). Of the original papers examined, 127 (49.41%) were descriptive, 73 (28.20%) had an experimental design and 53 (20.62%) were analytic. The most common field of study was basic sciences (150; 31.4%). Most first authors were affiliated with universities (93.9%). Informed consent requests were mentioned in 124 original papers (48.81%), whereas 71 (27.95%) indicated approval by an ethics committee. Conclusions: The most productive source was the Revista Estomatológica Herediana. Descriptive studies prevailed. The most common field of study was basic sciences. Most first authors were affiliated with universities. Most original papers were found to comply with research ethics standards
