The essential oil (EO) from the leaves of Tagetes minuta L. was obtained by the water vapour entrainment technique; the effect of concentrations of 5, 10, 15 and 20 μL/mL of EO on the growth of Morganella morganii was evaluated and quantified by the agar diffusion technique, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC); the average measurement of the growth inhibition halos was found to be 8, 7, 14.8, 16.4 and 18.1 mm respectively at each increasing concentration, the MIC was 0.49 μL/mL and the MBC was 0.98 μL/mL. It was determined, in vitro, that the EO from the leaves of Tagetes minuta L. has an antibacterial effect on the growth of Morganella morganii; this being a phytopharmacological alternative for the treatment of infections produced by this bacterium.
