The synergistic effect of the Linum usitatissimun mucilage (ML) and potassium iodide (KI)
was investigated as a corrosion inhibitor of P11 steel in 1.0 M HCl at different temperatures
using techniques: weight loss, Tafel extrapolation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
and electrochemical frequency modulation. KI increases the inhibitory effect of ML on
corrosion of P11 steel in a 1M HCl solution, which is attributed to a synergistic effect between
both components in the solution. Iodide ions improve the adsorption of ML on the surface of
the steel. The inhibitory effect of ML increased with the increase in the dosage of the KI and
with the temperature and its apparent activation energy decreased with the increase in the
dosage of the KI, which suggests a process of chemisorption of the ML molecules reinforced
with the presence of the KI. The maximum inhibition of 1 g/L of ML in the corrosive process
of P11 steel in 1.0 M HCl was obtained with a dosage of 5 mM KI. SEM-EDS analyses showed
that ML forms a film on the surface of P11 steel, reducing its corrosive process. The addition
of 5 mM of KI improves the corrosion inhibitory effect mainly of the ferrite phase, and the
corrosive process is located in the bainite phase. The four techniques used to evaluate the
synergistic effect of ML and potassium iodide showed a similar trend in the corrosion inhibition
efficiencies of P11 steel in 1M HC
