The Ecogravilla of steel slag is an industrial waste of the Aceros Arequipa Corporation, which is
obtained from the cooling in the open air of the slag used in the manufacture of steel construction. In
this thesis is proposed as an option to use as a coarse aggregate in the development of concrete
structures, in order to mitigate the environmental impact produced by this waste.
The way in which the Ecogravilla was used in this work was through the replacement of the stone in
percentages of 20%, 35%, 50% and 65%. Then, the impact on its compressive strength (NTP
339.034: 2015) and water penetration under pressure (UNE-EN 12390-8: 2011) was analyzed to
measure its permeability. After this, the results obtained were analyzed and the optimum percentage
was chosen to apply it in concrete made with cements type ICo and type V.
On the other hand, the physical properties of the sample of Ecogravilla in its natural state, collected
in the plant of the corporation located in Pisco, were also evaluated and explained. These results
were compared with those obtained from natural aggregates (stone and sand) from the El Milagro
quarry.
The results obtained from the compression and water penetration tests for concretes made with both
cement types show that up to a 50% substitution percentage of Ecogravilla per stone, the resistance
to compression increases as well as its impermeability. When the percentage of substitution is 65%,
the resistance and impermeability is reduced. Inclusively, the tests done to the mixtures in fresh state
are no longer workable and lose density.
This evaluation at engineering level made to concrete with Ecogravilla serves as a support to be able
to elaborate concretes with structural responsibility and is an alternative of use in structures that have
contact with water.
Finally, an economic analysis was made by using a conventional concrete against a concrete with
Ecogravilla and to verify the advantages that the use of the latter concretes brings in the useful life
of the structure.
