Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic and complex nosological entity that consists of a set of alterations characterized by hyperglycemia due to the decrease in the production of insulin due to the destruction of pancreatic islet beta cells and the resistance to insulin
According to WHO projections, "Diabetes is considered the seventh cause of mortality in 2030". This health problem, the current situation of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Ecuador in relation to Latin America, Ecuador does not evade this situation. Diabetes mellitus type in the year 2017 was the second cause of death.
Objective: To identify the Current Situation of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Ecuador in relation to Latin America based on Evidence Based Medicine in the last two years, to offer a useful update for Ecuadorian physicians.
Results: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus has increased in some Latin American countries, Mexico 13.1%, Nicaragua 11.5% Costa Rica 8.8%, Chile 8.5%, Panama 8.3%, Colombia 7.4%, Venezuela 6.5%, Peru 5.9%, Ecuador 5.6 %, where we can show that the countries with greater affectation are Mexico and Nicaragua.
Among the risk factors are the modifiable ones such as overweight and obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, smoking, dietary factors and non-modifiable factors such as age, race, family history, risk of complications.
