Introduction: epidural anesthesia and spinal anesthesia are anesthetic techniques similar, which decreases painful sensory perception. Spinal and epidural anesthesia while being both regional anesthesia have different behavior and therefore different management, effectiveness and risks.
General Objective: To determine the prevalence of epidural and spinal anesthesia in patients undergoing cesarean hospital José Carrasco Arteaga. Cuenca - Ecuador. July to December 2014
Methodology: A descriptive analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using the database developed in 450 women undergoing cesarean section in 2014 in the Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga. The information was collected in forms, all of which were developed by the authors, a database was developed, for which Excel 2010 is used, tables, were created and analyzed by frequency and percentage (%). Information It was analyzed using SPSS version 22 software.
Results: Of the 441 patients found that women aged 20-39 years were the most prevalent population subjected to spinal and epidural anesthesia with 92.1% (164) and 85.9% (226) correspondingly anesthesia epidural use in more overweight patients 38.8% (102) 35.0% and obesity (92), women with normal weight in 37.6% (67) was used spinal anesthesia and mostly overweight women in the 36.5 (65) spinal anesthesia was used mainly, the highest prevalence in the population was married under epidural anesthesia with 60% (153), epidural anesthesia was used more in urban areas patients 58.8% (204 ) in rural areas and 62.8% (59), higher education with the type of spinal anesthesia with 47.2% (84) and spinal anesthesia with 35.0% (92) was the most prevalent level of education , epidural anesthesia was used more in patients from urban areas 58.8% (204) and rural 62.8% (59).
Conclusion: There is a higher prevalence of epidural anesthesia in patients undergoing cesarean section
