Resumen
Introduction
Depression represents the most frequent mental disorder in the Elderly, with a higher risk of presentation than the rest of the population and underdiagnosed, and therefore requires to be investigated early for its treatment and prevention of complications. For this purpose, there are several psychometric instruments that need to be tested for their implementation in our population.
Goals
Compare the Yesavage Scale of 5 items versus the validated version of 15 questions.
Methods and Materials
A validation study was performed in a sample of 274 older adults (95% CI). The Yesavage Scales of 15 and 5 items were applied. The information was tabulated and analyzed in the program SPSS version 15.00 and as statistical measures were used frequencies and percentages.
Results
A significant concordance was found in the diagnosis of depression between the 5 and 15-item Yesavage Scales (k = 0.915, p <0.001). The 5-item scale showed a sensitivity of 90.3% and specificity of 99.0% for diagnosing depression. The positive predictive value was 95.9%; negative predictive value was 97.7%; Youden index 0.893 (95% CI: 0.875-0.910). The positive likelihood ratio was 93 and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.097.
Conclusion
The level of agreement between the two scales is excellent. The knowledge of the performance of the 5-item scale will serve to consider its use in the screening of this pathology.
