Background Research: In our city isn`t the exception because there is not exactly information about the depression as the cause of dependency in this age group. According to the World Health Organization, with worldwide studies, report that the depression affects 7% of the elderly population, in general and represents 1,6% of the total disability people over 65 years age.
Objetive: Identify the relationship of the depression and the dependency levels of the elderly that attends to consultation of the Centro de Salud Barrial Blanco, Cuenca 2016.
Methodology: The investigation was qualitative and quantitative, the type of study is descriptive, cross-sectional, with a universe of 915 persons of 65 years onwards. The sample for this research is 209 elderlies, information obtained through of an adjusted formula. The research technique was through the application of the test: Geriatric Depression Scale (Yesavage), the Scale of Katz and The Scale of Lawton and Brody. The information was processed through of the program SPSS V23.
Results: The results show that elderlies who have depression correspond to 56% and with functional dependence, 12,4% that correspond to elderly with moderate and severe dependence. The 17,22% presented severe and total instrumental dependency. The 12,44% of older adults with depression shows moderate and severe functional dependence, the 17,23% of older adults with depression, presented severe and total instrumental dependence.
Conclusions: The investigation shows that there is a relationship between depression and dependency levels, because while greater depression is, greater is the level of functional dependence and instrumental
