Resumen
The following research was conducted to promote the awareness of the consequences that the absence of patrimonial and economic violence regulation, the acknowledgment, enjoyment, and exercise of economic rights have in women’s life.
The document analysis included the 2008 Ecuadorian Constitution, the various International Treaties ratified in Ecuador regarding violence against women, the Criminal Code in force, the Integral Organic Law to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women, and research carried out in the field.
To collect data, a qualitative investigation using a semi-structured interview technique was administered. Then, the interviewees were categorized and divided into groups: victims of violence, professionals who work at the attention centers specialized in violence, and justice operators.
The results of the research show the lack of knowledge that women have about economic and patrimonial violence. In addition, even though in Ecuador economic and patrimonial violence was recognized as another type of violence in the Integral Organic Law to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women since February 2018, it was found that there are no lawsuits of economic and patrimonial violence in the courts. Instead, the accusations are set as psychological violence.
The main conclusion, based on the research question, is that the recognition of economic and patrimonial violence in the law does not guarantee that women can fully exercise their economic rights.
