Introduction: Older adults are also a growing population have increased risk of diseases and are a major source of medical consultations at all levels of care.
Objective: To characterize the morbidity and mortality in the adult population hospitalized at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital of the Cuenca City in 2009-2013 period.
Methodology: This was a retrospective study, carried out using the medical charts of 653 elderly patients hospitalized in the internal medicine, emergency and surgery of Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital of Cuenca City during the period 2009-2013. A review of medical records for data collection was performed subsequently using SPSS statistical package for Windows 19, results are presented in frequency tables.
Results: The mean age was at 77.08 years with SD of 8.10 years, with feminine sex the most frequent with 55% of cases; rate of discharges per million / persons was higher in 2009 with 202 patients; the department that spanned more patients surgery was 43.3% while that of most prevalent diagnosis was acute abdomen egress with 16.1%; and into the causes of this diagnosis cholecystolithiasis represent 21.9%; the most representative comorbidity was hypertension with 12.8% of the population; mortality in recent years was 2.6% and the cardiac arrest caused these deaths in 58.8% of cases; as the gastrointestinal system represent 28% of cases.
Conclusions: The major morbidity in the elderly population in the last five points to abdominal pathologies and surgical resolution.
